DNA is the twisted ladder that carries your genetic code. It breaks constantly — sunlight, chemicals, and ordinary cell activity all snap it. An enzyme called ligase runs along the strand and joins the ends back together. Most cancers begin as a break that was mended wrongly or not at all.

Cells that are worn out, damaged, or finished their job shut themselves down. Macrophages — the body's clean-up crew — wrap around them and absorb them whole. Without that clearing, tissue can't rebuild, and lingering old cells can fuel inflammation.

Stem cells are the body's reserves: they can divide to become whatever tissue is needed. After chemotherapy, a few thousand stem cells in the bone marrow rebuild the entire blood and immune system. Waking one is the start of everything growing back.

Inflammation is the body's alarm: useful for a few days, harmful if it never switches off. Regulatory T-cells and signalling molecules called resolvins tell the alarm to stand down, so repair can begin. It doesn't happen in an instant; it takes sustained signal.

Growth factors are messenger proteins that tell resting cells to divide. One burst can wake a whole population at once. The drug given after chemotherapy to bring white blood cells back is a growth factor.
